Bullitt County Public Schools
bringing the graduate profile to life in bullitt county
ullitt County Public Schools had a clear mission: the Graduate Profile shouldn’t live on a poster, a website, or a slide deck — it needed to live in the community. District leaders wanted families, staff, and students to see it, hear it, and genuinely understand how these competencies show up in real classrooms every day.
BCPS partnered with the alchemy collaborative to create a districtwide video series that captured authentic voices and made the Graduate Profile unmistakably human.
the challenge
Although the Graduate Profile was well-designed, leaders knew that understanding lagged behind intention. They faced three core challenges: visibility, relevance, and ownership.

making the graduate profile visible
The Graduate Profile had become something families saw during presentations — not something they experienced. BCPS needed a way to move it out of printed materials and into everyday understanding.

showing the competencies in real life
Staff and families needed concrete examples of how the competencies appeared in instruction. The comms director pulled together teachers connected to past cohorts, mapped competencies, and ensured every skill was represented.
centering authentic student + staff voice
The heart of the Graduate Profile lives in the people who use it. BCPS wanted teachers and students — not district leaders — to explain what these competencies look like in action. Finding the right classrooms, coordinating filming windows, and elevating genuine storytelling required clear systems and collaboration.
the alchemy collaborative approach
building a competency-aligned filming plan
Working from a carefully built spreadsheet, the district identified teachers closely connected to Graduate Profile work. Each teacher selected 1–3 students who could speak naturally about their learning, ensuring every competency was represented with authenticity.
capturing real stories in real classrooms
Alchemy filmed across multiple schools, focusing on organic dialogue rather than scripted answers. The goal was simple: let students and staff show — not tell — what learning looks and feels like in BCPS.
creating a polished series of competency videos
Each video highlighted a specific Graduate Profile component — from Effective Communicator to Self-Directed Navigator — using moments pulled directly from instruction, collaboration, reflection, and problem-solving.
designing a districtwide rollout
Alchemy developed a nine-week campaign plan including video galleries, social pacing, recommended captions, engagement touchpoints, and a clear connection to the district’s Community-Based Accountability model.
the result

The Graduate Profile came alive across the district. What had once been text on a wall became a series of stories told by students and teachers — relatable, energizing, and deeply human. BCPS now has a fully built video library, a polished website hub, and a structured campaign that continues to strengthen understanding and ownership.
The district saw increased engagement across social media, positive feedback from families, and renewed energy among teachers who saw their classrooms represented. The videos now serve as evidence for Community-Based Accountability, a tool for future board presentations, and a long-term storytelling asset.
BCPS plans to continue adding new stories each year, integrating videos into events, newsletters, and future CBA dashboards. The biggest lesson? When students and staff explain the Graduate Profile, the community listens — and the story becomes personal.

"We always knew our Graduate Profile mattered, but these videos helped our community finally feel it. Hearing our own students and teachers explain the competencies made everything click." — BCPS Communications Director
